When actively and critically reading I start from the beginning and highlight pieces that I want to return to and believe could have some importance. I find strong paragraphs that could be used to prove a point or paragraphs that I want to further look into. For example, In Nicholas Carr’s “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” I highlighted most of the second paragraph on the first page. (First picture) This is where Carr talks about his way of thinking changing because he can’t immerse himself in an article anymore. I highlighted this because Carr makes a very big claim that he is not thinking the way he used to. I also highlighted the end of the second paragraph on page 2 which mentions how we zip along the surface of words rather than scuba dive like we used to. (Second picture) I highlighted this because it related to the previous quote I had highlighted in the sense that google is changing us. I continued through the whole article highlighting places that are most related to the way technology changes the way we think. This way that I annotated tells me that I am able to draw relationships by picking quotes that connect to the overall theme of an article and to each other.
Some parts I annotated were parts I was curious about such as the 4th paragraph on page 6. (Third picture) This states we’d be better off if we had the worlds information attached to our brain but I don’t know if that’s true. I wanted to go back to that and dig deeper which shows my ability to challenge and extend an idea.
